The German Citizenship Exam: Your Ultimate Guide
Understanding the requirements, processes, structure, and registration for the Einbürgerungstest in Germany.
What is the "Leben in Deutschland" Test?
The "Leben in Deutschland" (LID) test is the final exam taken by attendees of the Integration Course (Integrationskurs), overseen by the BAMF. It assesses knowledge of the legal system, society, history, and living conditions in Germany. For candidates seeking German naturalization, scoring 17 out of 33 serves as proof of civic knowledge required for citizenship.
Test Structure and Format
The examination is standard and paper-based. Each candidate receives a questionnaire containing 33 multiple-choice questions randomly compiled from the 310-question pool. Out of the 33 questions:
- 30 general questions on politics, democracy, history, and social values.
- 3 state-specific questions concerning the specific Bundesland (federal state) where you reside.
- Every question has 4 potential options with only one single correct answer.
How to Schedule and Register
To register for the citizenship test, you must locate an authorized testing center (Prüfstelle) near you. Typically, these are municipal adult education centers (Volkshochschule - VHS) or accredited language schools.
You must register in person at least 4 to 6 weeks before the examination date. You will need to present your national passport or official residence permit and pay the standard examination fee of €25. Testing spots fill up quickly, so scheduling several months in advance is highly recommended.
Who is Exempt from the Test?
You are generally exempt from taking the Einbürgerungstest if you cannot satisfy the requirements due to physical, mental, or psychological illness, disability, or age-related hardships. You are also exempt if you hold a German school-leaving certificate (such as Hauptschulabschluss, Realschulabschluss, or Abitur) or have completed a university degree in a relevant field (politics, law, or social sciences) in Germany.
